Dissertation Writing Groups

The Writing Center is currently piloting dissertation writing groups. Research has shown that peer support is one of the most important predictors of timely completion. These groups are an opportunity for students at all phases of the dissertation process to meet, support each other, and write while having direct access to writing center staff and resources. If you are interested in joining one of these groups, please sign up for times that work for you. Currently, we are offering both face-to-face and zoom options for these meetings.

Dissertation Editing

The Writing Center does not edit dissertations; rather, we instruct you on issues related to writing your dissertation. We will help you become aware of common issues and instruct on editing techniques. For dissertation editing services, the Writing Center can offer you a list of editors whom you can pay to edit your work.  Contact us at write@smumn.edu for this list of editors.

Formatting/Typesetting Services 

The visual elements of a dissertation controlled by Microsoft Word (tables, figures, headings, table of contents, page numbers, margins, etc.) are called “formatting” or “typesetting.”  It can be frustrating and time-consuming to format your dissertation, and so you might need an editor who focuses on just formatting/typesetting.  The Writing Center will not format/typeset your dissertation for you.  We are happy to teach you how to format certain aspects –especially tables and figures–of your dissertation yourself if you set up a zoom meeting with us, but for deeper formatting issues, you might consider hiring an editor to do it for you.  

Most dissertation editing services actually include formatting/typesetting suggestions for you.  However, if all you need is formatting/typesetting and no other editing suggestions, you can save money by asking a dissertation editor to focus on just formatting/typesetting.  The Writing Center keeps a list of vetted editors who can focus on just formatting/typesetting at reasonable rates that are cheaper than getting a full edit of your dissertation.  For this list, please email us at write@smumn.edu.
